Prize Rendered Meaningless

Christopher Columbus_Alejo Fernández between 1505 and 1536

Yesterday the committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize made their announcement of their choices for the award. The winners were Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change based in Geneva Switzerland that was founded in 1988. The other half of the prize went to former Vice President algore. The reason they cited for awarding this prize to such questionable nominees were "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change".

Since the release of the movie that algore created called “An Inconvenient Truth” it has been shown that the facts that algore used are questionable at best and an outright lie at worst. There is no question the planet earth is in a warming mode and scientists that are free to speak agree that this is a natural and inevitable function due to the many natural and uncontrollable factors that affect the earth. We will have to make adjustments like growing different crops in areas where certain crops are grown now but no drastic measures will be needed to solve such natural changes.

I liken the scare tactics algore has used to those that I read about when I was young. Christopher Columbus was a pretty slick guy too and he used a trick on native Indians in 1504; Columbus learned that there would be a total eclipse of the moon. (Acting as if he was religious), he told the Indians that God would punish them by removing the light unless they promised to supply the Spaniards with plenty of cassava, corn and fish...The Indians did not believe this but before the eclipse was complete, they, with great howling and lamentation, came running from every direction to the ships laden with provisions, praying to Columbus to intercede with God in their behalf."

Sound familiar? I’m sure it does, it is exactly the same principle algore is using to promote himself and his phony cause to make money and possibly make another run for the Presidency. The once highly prestigious Nobel Peace that was created by Alfred Nobel to reward those that show uncommon dedication to excellence has now been rendered meaningless by recognizing algore for his petty parlor trick.

Clever how you tied together Christopher Columbus and Al Gore.

Thanks Word, but algore is the one that reminded me of the story of Christopher Columbus. The portrait you see above in my post is the only portrait that was ever known to be an actual portrait painted of Christopher Columbus. There is another one that most people identify as Columbus that was painted by Sebastiano del Piombo but it has been disputed for many years whether it is Columbus or not.

Anyway, the other day when I was rooting around a few sites to see what the Columbus haters were saying nowadays about Chris Columbus I remembered the story about the Indians and the eclipse and found it on one of my history websites. So this morning when I heard about algore it just hit me, dang, I heard this story somewhere before.

Ol' Chris was a shrewd operator no doubt about it and he knew his way around a scam or two, he had to. Back in Spain they were a pretty tough audience and you paid with your life or limbs for losing the Queen's money.

The Indians had never seen any of the European parlor tricks so they were ripe to be manipulated by a guy like Chris. He just had to be careful to keep his head on his shoulders on both sides of the Atlantic.

I guess algore figured if it worked for ol' Chris Columbus it can work for him.

I won't be too terribly surprised if next year the committee awards a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize to hitler.

J_G, thanks for the outstanding commentary over at MidnightBlue. I've been away and out of internet access this week. Thanks for taking up the charge on my blog.

Oh, BTW, I seemed to have killed my external HD. There is a good chance I will lose my photos and video from the Chester County rally.

I am in agony.

I don't know which is more ridiculous: The Nobel Committee or Al Bore?

It's sad that this prize has been so cheapened by these political stunts of naming hacks like Al Bore and Jimmy Carter.

Reagan won the Cold War, eliminated the threat of nuclear war and freed millions from communist tryanny but no prize for him.

I almost look forward to seeing who they'll choose for the next Nobel Peace Prize - it's such a damn joke.

LOVED the video. About Christopher Columbus - I never knew about his trick with the eclipse until it was covered in my oldest's history last year. The things I was never taught!! I'm amazed at the things that I was never taught.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Skye.

JG,..the Nobel peace Prize was declared a meaningless anomaly when they gave it to Yasser Arafat.

Giving it to Algore just confirms the Nobel's uselessness in our society.

Didn't Rumsfeld make a remark a few years ago about the lack of impact from "Old Europe?"

So who would you have choosen for the Nobel Peace prize, j_g?

Not that I have anything against Al Gore, personally, I would of liked to see the Burma monks get it.

BTW, what do you think of the latest decision in the LT Ethren Watada Case?

Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who saved the lives of Jewish children during World War II

This would have been the one I would have chosen for this award. This woman's actions greatly overshadow a former VP with a dubious slide show presentation.

Next year, will people like Irena Sendler be overlooked in favor of cowards like ethern watada for this Nobel prize?

What Mike said!

And I cant believe they gave the Nobel to Gorbachev (However you spell it) and not Reagan is beyond me.

But giving this prize to Gore is way beyond stupid.

Great Video Jenn :-)

Civilian Courts have no Constituional authoirity to intervene in the Ethren Watada case. He was and active duty soldier refusing to obey a direct order. The civilian Judge needs to be given a course on Constituional law.

As far as Peace Prize winners I would nominated Rita Verdonk the Integration Minister of Holland for her courage to stand up for the rights of women and stop the bullying by Muslims in her country.

Good choice too Skye. When you told me the story I thought it was very compelling and indicative of the courage that special people possess and use it to do the right and honorable thing. algore is another self aggrandizing politician that resorts to nothing more than a fancy parlor trick to increase his wealth and power. He is a loser of monumental proportions and has done everything he could to make up for that but in the eyes of people that possess and use their common sense it is plain as wooden head on his his shoulders.

U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin H. Settle ( a military lawyer in the Army in the 1970s and appointed to the federal bench by President Bush) determined that he has jurisdiction under federal law to grant the stay and that Watada's claim that a second-trial amounts to double jeopardy is not frivolous and "has merit" for consideration.

Apparently Bush & the U.S. military are not yet above the Law...

J_G said...

That Federal judge has has no juridiction and the charges of disobeying a direct order should be the only consideration under the UCMJ. The only one in this case that is acting above the laws and the Constituion is the Federal judge that chose to insert himself where he has no authority.

Well in any case, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

That was the most I've watched of his presentation and I've seen enough. Thanks for the useful update. The man is full of hubris.

Cartoon for skye.

Tom, the smugness of Gore is galling. Theres a good reason why he couldn't win the Presidency; not even the Supreme Court could stand the thought of that moron being President.

Word, you are without a doubt the King of Political Cartoons.
